METASPHERE SKETCH
This sketch is surprisingly close to what El actually created. Although clearly some ideas were dropped and others introduced as the masterpiece progressed. Midway through, Elliott noticed his Nikkormat FTN did not have a sufficiently precise viewfinder. He changed horses in midstream as it were and swapped it for a Nikon F2, about six weeks into Metasphere's creation. At the time the F2 was the only camera in the world with 100% accurate viewing. Essential to achieve the obsessive symmetry evident in the piece. Most people think it was done on 5 x 4 large format camera, but this would have been technically impossible, due to the restricted depth of field of such cameras. Elliott loves clarity and hyperfidelity and only rarely allows blur, if it can strengthen an idea, which it seldom does.
